Child counselling and play therapy services in Jimboomba.

Why Play Therapy?

Children often express emotions through behaviour, play, creativity, or body language rather than words.

Using a trauma-informed and developmentally appropriate approach, sessions are tailored to your child’s unique needs, personality, and stage of development.

Play therapy can support children experiencing:

  • anxiety or worries

  • emotional regulation difficulties

  • behavioural challenges

  • school or friendship struggles

  • grief and loss

  • low self-esteem

  • trauma or stressful life events

  • attachment or relationship concerns

  • neurodivergence and sensory difficulties

Play is often the language of children’s deepest feelings.

Our Approach

Our approach is grounded in Child-Centred Play Therapy, Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP), and the PACE model. We provide a therapeutic space that values curiosity, connection, emotional safety, and relationship-based support.

Using developmentally appropriate, and attachment-informed approaches, we support children to:

  • explore and understand emotions

  • strengthen emotional regulation

  • build confidence and resilience

  • develop healthy relationships

  • process difficult experiences

Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy — helps guide the therapeutic relationship and supports children to feel safe, seen, and valued exactly as they are.

We recognise the importance of caregiver relationships and work collaboratively to strengthen connection, repair, and emotional growth.

Depending on your child’s needs, sessions may include:

  • parent check-ins

  • collaborative goal setting

  • strategies to support emotional regulation at home

  • strengthening connection and communication

  • dyadic or attachment-focused work

The goal is to support not only the child, but the relationships around them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is play therapy suitable for?

Play therapy is suitable for children aged 3–12 years. We offer dedicated therapy spaces for different age groups, including separate spaces for younger and older children, with therapeutic activities thoughtfully provided to support each child’s developmental stage and interests.

What happens during a play therapy session?

Sessions may include creative & imaginative play, sensory activities, expressive therapies, games and child-led experiences designed to help children express and regulate their emotions, build resilience and grow their confidence.

Will I stay in the session with my child?

Some sessions may include parent or caregiver involvement, while others are child-led depending on their needs and therapeutic goals. Parents and caregivers are welcome to relax in our comfortable waiting lounge with access to refreshments and Wi-Fi.

How many sessions will my child need?

Every child is unique. Some children benefit from short-term support, while others may benefit from ongoing therapy depending on their needs.

Do you support neurodivergent children?

Yes. We provide a neuroaffirming and developmentally supportive approach that recognises and respects each child’s unique strengths, needs, and ways of communicating.

We support private fee and NDIS participants (plan and self-managed). For NDIS, please check if your plan has access to child counselling, usually under Capacity Building or Improved Daily Living.

How do I know if play therapy is right for my child?

Play therapy may benefit children experiencing emotional, behavioural, relational, or attachment-related concerns, especially when emotions are difficult to express verbally.

Can parents or caregivers be involved in the therapeutic process?

Yes. Parent and caregiver involvement is an important part of supporting progress beyond the therapy space. We require a parent review session approximately every 5th or 7th session to discuss progress, provide parent support, and engage in collaborative goal setting.

How do we get started?

We begin with a free introductory phone call to discuss your child’s needs, answer any questions, and explore availability.

Following this, a 50-minute parent consultation is required without the child present. This allows us to gain a thorough understanding of your child’s history, current concerns, relationships, strengths, and therapeutic goals before sessions begin.
